Scouts often fawn over picture-perfect mechanics. And to be clear, achieving a pitching motion without an ounce of wasted energy is an admirable goal. But in the end, effective pitches can can come from wildly different throwing motions. So if a safe delivery cannot be manufactured, how can youth coaches reduce injuries and increase efficiency among their young pitchers?

In this episode of Sideline Data, we set out to demystify the concept of acute vs. chronic workload and how it relates to injury prevention. To gain a better understanding of shoulder and elbow fatigue among youth pitchers, we welcomed Dr. Joshua Dines, sports medicine surgeon from the Hospital for Special Surgery, back to the podcast. Dr. Dines is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at HSS in New York City. Additionally, Dr. Dines is a team physician with the New York Mets and New York Rangers and is one of 200 active members, worldwide, of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society.
