Hello World: We’re the LeagueApps Engineering Team

console.log(‘Hello World!’)—A phrase many engineers read as they start their programming journey. Coincidentally, it’s also where we’ll begin as we officially introduce the LeagueApps Engineering Team to the world. We have decades of experience building and maintaining technology that has enabled exponential growth— from handling a few dozen users a decade ago to processing millions of dollars in transactions today. This success has been driven by a set of values that we maintain throughout our company and have helped new team members determine that a career with LeagueApps is what is the best engineering job for them. It has been an incredible experience thus far, so we want to lift our heads up and say hello so you can learn a little bit about us.

There is a central tenet that guides our developers each and every day: our company values. Some employers list token buzzwords on their marketing site, but at LeagueApps, we take our company values very seriously and hold each and every employee to them. We convene at Organized Team Activities (aka OTAs, our twice-yearly, company-wide team-building retreats), and the values by which we run our business are front-and-center each time. Values are also one of the first topics discussed when we interview candidates for jobs. Our engineering team is composed of people with diverse experience and expertise, and our company values guide us with every line of code.

What Makes the LeagueApps Engineering Team?

Passion

It starts with  passion for technology and sports. We’re building beautiful technologies that enhance sports organizers’ ability to provide exceptional youth sports experiences. Sports have touched each of us in some way and brought us to where we are today. This passion is on display daily (and present in each commit).

Openness

We place a premium on openness: making sure expectations align with reality by communicating clearly and consistently with one another. Among our team, we welcome ideas and actively seek feedback. We become the best engineers we can be when we can operate openly in a positive environment.

Student of the Game

No one has all the answers when it comes to software development, but we have a natural curiosity about how things work (or don’t work!). We dive deeply into topics, and come out the other side wiser and smarter. We are students of the game, constantly learning and seeking out improvement for ourselves to the benefit of our team and partners.

Grit

Chances are, the first solution you find on the internet is not the right or ideal one. You don’t stop there and give up, do you? Neither do we! We display grit by never giving up, but rather tackling problems head-on. We keep exploring and grinding until we find viable solutions.

Results

We are focused on results. Getting the job done and ensuring our code is performant is paramount for our business. We deliver for our teammates and partners, and that’s what counts at the end of the day.

Team and Sportsmanship

We are talented individual engineers, but we are an even more impressive team. As such, we are thoughtful about how our code and actions will affect other teammates. No one wants to be the next developer to maintain code with function names like ‘foo’, ‘bar’, and ‘baz’. Being fair, generous, and real  is inherent in our engineering culture, represented through our sportsmanship.  Competing solutions and demands abound at LeagueApps, but we are conscientious and treat one another with respect. That goes for our fellow engineers as well as non-technical colleagues of ours in other company departments.

Difference-Maker

At the end of the day, each one of us strives to be a difference maker. We believe sports can teach many of life’s lessons and change lives for the better. Through the code we write, we believe we are making a difference in the lives of children wherever they play.

We are excited to spread our engineering culture and company values. We look to pull back the curtain on lessons learned, insights gained, and problems solved—From high-level abstractions to detailed implementation. If you think a career at LeagueApps would be the best engineering job for you, we happily invite you to follow us on our journey.
