The Secrets to eCommerce Success: 5 Tips to Making eCommerce Work

Feature Highlight, Product News, Value of LeagueApps

We’re a week into the release of eCommerce Products, and we love hearing all of the different ways that our partners are using the product to generate revenue and donations.

Many of our partners are using the feature to sell apparel and equipment, so we thought we’d offer a few tips on eCommerce fulfillment.

Michael Strashun, a new member of our Partnership Sales team worked as an Amazon merchant before coming to LeagueApps, put together his “Top 5 Tips to Making eCommerce Work for Your League.”

Here are some of the secrets of the industry that will help you to operate like a pro!

1) Manage Your Inventory!

It’s no surprise that if you’re going to be selling merchandise, you need to keep proper track of your inventory!  Use the reporting tools built into the platform to track how much product you are moving.  This information is crucial, as you will be able to know when you should restock!

Manage your inventory easily with LeagueApps

It is always better to have people pestering you to restock your inventory rather than selling out and not having the items that they purchased!  Use this to your advantage!  People are more likely to buy when they see that you are running low!

LeagueApps even auto-generates a message on your products when your inventory drops below 10 units, letting your members know that supply is running low and motivating them to act quickly.

I would also recommend only listing 75% of your current inventory for sale on the website (i.e. if you have 20 shirts, only list that 15 are for sale).  There are always a few problems that come up when fulfilling orders, the last thing that you want to do is get caught up in a jam.

2) Keep track of your sales!

Staying on top of orders that come in will mean less hassle for you in the long run.  Getting overwhelmed with orders is a likely possibility (at least I hope so), especially when you are selling items through registration.  Stay on top of orders as they come in to prevent things from getting lost in the fray!

Take advantage of the detailed reporting tools that allow you to keep track of every aspect of your eCommerce program.

3) Be transparent!

When people pay for something, they expect to be informed as to what is going on.  Make sure to edit the fulfillment details to let your customers know when they should expect to receive their items.  If you are planning on handing the gear out on the first day of the season, let them know!

If products are final sale (common in the case of custom apparel, unless there’s a defect), then make sure to include those terms of sale.

In the eCommerce Products admin module, you can include these messages in the Fulfillment Details field, which will be included in the product information that your members see prior to purchase.

Be transparent with your products; easily managed in LeagueApps

If you are shipping your items, be prepared for inquiries about the shipping status.  Use the LeagueApps communications tools to keep your customers updated on the status of their order.  Just like before, use the product notes to set expectations on when their order will be fulfilled!

4) Don’t freak out when problems arise!

Every eCommerce program runs into its set of challenges.  There are bound to be some problem orders that come up.  Don’t freak out!  Most problems have a simple solution.  If you followed my inventory tips above, you should never have to worry about not having an item to complete a sale.  The inventory tips will also help out with exchanges (people don’t always order the correct size).

The second most common problem area is an angry customer inquiring about their order.  Follow tip #3, stay transparent.  If things are running late, just let the customer know.  They are much more likely to be understanding if you inform them sooner rather than later.  No one likes being hung out to dry!

5) Use eCommerce to your advantage!

This is a great opportunity for all of our partners to increase their revenue and create a more convenient and fun experience for their members.  Even if you’re a non-profit organization, there are always projects left on the backburner because they just don’t fit into the budget.  Use these new tools to generate more revenue and get things done!

Use eCommerce to your advantage

If you are finding success selling merchandise, don’t be afraid to try to expand.  A great way to test out demand for a new item is to list it with a note saying, “If we have enough demand for this product, we will order a batch.  You can expect to have the item by ______.  If there is not enough demand, expect to see an email with confirmation of your refund by ______.”  This will properly set expectations and avoid you the hassle of ordering product and having little to no interest in it.

You can also test demand for a product, and fulfill it through Amazon or Walmart, before deciding you want to take on the inventory risk.

eCommerce Products Now Available For Sale

Feature Highlight, Product News, Release Notes, Value of LeagueApps

The LeagueApps team is happy to announce the release of our newest feature – eCommerce Products. Now within LeagueApps you can sell additional products and merchandise. You can choose to sell items during the registration process and/or as standalone products. If you are interested in learning more about different eCommerce ideas for your league, check out our Top 5 Ways to Use eCommerce Products blog post written by our President, Jeremy Goldberg.

Creating a Product

The first step to selling a product is to create the product.  You can access your products listing from either the “Manage” menu, the “Products” link on the program listings page, or the “Products” tab within the program details.  If you need more info on where to access your products, each of those links contain screen shots to give you some more guidance.

When creating a product you are able to set the properties of the item – including name, descriptions, price, shipping options, sales tax, and and image.

There are also options to sell your products outside of the registration as a standalone product.  From the view product page you are able to access a direct link for your product, as well as a widget to help promote and sell your product on other pages or sites.

After you have created your product you can create custom form field for your product, such as shirt size or color.  These extra fields are created in the same way you create additional form fields for your registration.  The last step in setting up your product is selecting which program they will be available for.  You are able to filter and choose as many programs as you would like to assign your product to .

Purchasing A Product

You will notice a new step in the registration process.  This new step appears after a player enters their program specific registration details and before payment.

These are the same products which you assigned to the program from the admin console.  If there are no products assigned to this program or the items available are out of inventory the new step will not appear.  You are able to choose different quantities per product and multiple products.  If there are custom fields for a product they will be displayed on this page as well.  After you select a product it will appear in your “cart” on the right hand side of the page along with a running total of your registration fees and product purchases.  Once you are finished with your selections, you can choose the “Continue to Payment” options to finalize your registration and pay for your order.

Product Reporting

You’ll notice a new report under the Reports menu for Product Orders.  This where you can view and manage your product orders.

In the order history report you can see a list of all of your orders, as well as update the details, modify the status, and export your report to a CSV file.  When you change an order status to “Closed” that indicates that it has been delivered to the purchaser.  You can quickly close out multiple order quickly and easily from the main listings page by simply clicking the “Close Order” link from the status column.

We are incredibly excited to announce this feature.  We hope you are as as excited about it as we are.  As always please let us know if you have any additional feedback.  And definitely take a minute and check out our 5 Top Ways to use eCommerce Products blog post for some good tips!

Five Top Ways to Use the New eCommerce Products Feature

Best Practices, Feature Highlight, Product News, Value of LeagueApps

LeagueApps has just released eCommerce Products, a new feature that will allow our partners to manage and sell “products” to their members through the registration process and on their website. Read the full release notes here.

We have built LeagueApps with the belief that sports organizers are central to the local sports experience.  Our platform has made our partners more efficient and effective in managing their programs.  Our eCommerce features will now let our partners deliver a better experience for their members, while placing them at the center of participation-related commerce.

Five Top Ways to Use eCommerce Products

We’ve designed the feature to be flexible and customizable for you to create and sell any type of product. After numerous great conversations with our partners about how they intend to use the feature, we thought we’d share a few of the top examples and use-cases.

1) Sell Additional T-Shirts or Premium Shirts

Many of our partners provide a t-shirt as part of the registration fee. But they are often asked about buying an extra shirt, or if they can sell premium shirts like performance apparel.

Dave from PortSports, for example, has begun selling shirts for specific sports, such as volleyball dry-fit shirts. But the logistics of selling and collecting payment and managing inventory is challenging. With eCommerce Products, you can now sell extra or premium shirts during registration, collect payment, and then place orders with your local vendors.

2) Sell League-Branded Swag that You’ve Produced

Some of you have created water bottles, key chains, sweatshirts, beer koozies, and more as part of the branding efforts for your league.

Susan from Big D Sports gives her participants various gifts each season. With members who want to purchase additional items and shelves of extra product, she’ll now be able to sell that inventory to members during registration and throughout the season. Other partners might decide to gauge demand and sell products during registration, and then order the exact number of product needed.

3) Sell Related Equipment

You know best about the right kind of equipment your members might want or need to participate in your sports programs. Rather than direct your members to another website, or to a local store, you can now sell a recommended product during registration.

Matt from Kickball365 has been selling kickballs to his members for his competitive kickball leagues. With eCommerce Products, he’ll have control of the entire process, and can take advantage of the fact that his members are most likely going to want to purchase a kickball when they sign up for a league or tournament.

4) Sell Related Products for Events

You may be one of many of our partners that organize events and outings, from happy hours and social events to weekend experiences.

Justin and Social Boston Sports live up to their name and offer various events, such as Rafting and Ski Trips. Now Justin can sell Ski rentals and lift tickets, tent rentals, and VIP after-party tickets during the sign-up process.

5) Encourage Donations to Your Charities

We are always inspired by our many partners who connect their members to local charities, through donations and service.

Alex from District Sports, for instance, works closely with local charities and schools to support sports programming through financial and in-kind support and product donation. He’ll now have the opportunity to encourage his members to contribute directly to these worthy organizations, where a few extra dollars from his members can go a long way in making a difference in the community.

You can use the eCommerce Product feature to create these donation opportunities, such as creating a new product for each donation level.
